Feel free to visithttp://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/28/police-department-to-examine-pepper-spray-incident/ to view more on the incidents. There has been multiple reports of different uses of police brutality and 1st amendment right infringement. The main focus of the article is a pepper spray incident. The police showed their force by abusing women and attacking men with pepper spray. But, surprisingly, their hasn't been much uproar over the issue.
The main press on this is mainly coming from liberal news outlets. In fact, on ABC News, they censored out the police macing a defenseless women. This should not be allowed in a '"free" country. The American people shouldn't stand for this. We should take back this nation. We cannot be back down, we need to stand up to authority like the Libyians and the Egyptians. Authority and power only exists if you let it exist.
All in all, there needs to be a stop in this Constitutional infringement. If you want to end this travesty, you can sign this petition. http://www.addictinginfo.org/2011/09/26/sign-petition-to-stop-obscene-nypd-brutality-stand-with-occupywallst-protestors/ Thank you for your time.
So I really love that you found a petition for this and I also really love that your picture is Perry the Platypus.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think its so awful that there's so much police brutality towards such a peaceful protest. I read an article that said that about 700 people have been arrested, and there's a quote from one man that was arrested and he said he was put in a cell full of actual criminals who committed serious crimes and was handcuffed next to the bathroom for 8 hours. Somehow, that does NOT seem necessary.
As for your comment on ABC news, I think it really makes sense. The news loves tragedy and its loves to instill fear into people...but not when its an "American Problem," as in, the there's a serious flaw with the American government. During a MRSA or mad-cow outbreak or there are new threats of terrorism, there's not a news channel not covering it. I think it really is a shame that the news is trying to downplay things like police pepper-spraying innocent women. It's just amazing that ABC news is trying to keep this from people, when the protest is really reaching everyone. I have a few friends whose parents are there protesting right now. It's a serious thing and ABC news had better hope that people don't get all French and start burning stuff.
I'd have to agree with both of you concerning this issue. It's just ridiculous how much information is kept from citizens in this country. The government and police do things that are unlawful and brutal (such as these incidents) and keep them all on a "need-to-know" basis. If we are a free country we should be able to express our issues freely, as long as it's in a non-violent fashion. The only way to stop a problem is to address it and have it be heard, but if the police abuse their power and attack innocent protesters, there is a serious problem with our government. We all have a right to know what's really going on on the news, and censoring out videos of police brutality just shows that our government is afraid and weaker than we think. If they can't face their own domestic problems, what gives them any right to try and fix other countries'.

ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I think we should all definitely sign this petition! From the information in this blog I've gathered that this is a HUGE first amendment right violation. I don't understand why tax dollars had to go into spraying pepper spray into the eyes of PEACEFUL protesters. That's so unnecessary to say the least.
ReplyDeletePolice brutality is always something that the public seems to care about so why is this event any different? It shouldn't be swept under the rug like it never happened, which is how the media is treating it. If police use excessive force towards peaceful protesters, what will they do for NON-peaceful protesters??? :/
Well while people protest this action people forget that its not as bad as it is in other countries such as Iran when the 2009 protests happened because of election fraud. People there were "gone forever" or there family and friends were roughed up by the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution. Or in Russia when the Russian police were beating people over the head that gave them injuries that are Permanent because of the December 2009 protests against people from the Caucasus Mountains mostly Chechens. There are bad people everywhere but the police are only doing their job they are paid to do thats all protests stops work which causes the American taxpayers money every day it goes on, no one can fully be blamed for the economy going down hill like a sewer the president should also take blame as much as wall street because he has only made it worse with his bills that were suppose to help but only made the crisis worse. There is a limit to freedom of speech just be glad we dont live in Iran or Russia then we would really have problems then.
ReplyDeleteBy now these protests have exploded in size, along with media coverage. Mainstream media can't ignore this story any longer now that nation attention has shifted to the occupy wall street movement.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Police walk a tenuous line when it comes to protesters. If you protest something that ensures the Police's way of life, they may commit brutality! Sad truth.
I just hope that politicians and corporations won't try to sabotage this internally like the GOP did withe the Tea party movement :P
I agree police brutality needs to be stopped, but there isn't a finite line as to where self-protection begins, and brutality begins. And it's all situational, in certain circumstances maybe pepper-spray is the right choice and others not. If there were a way to better control how police officers use their weapons I'd most likely agree with it, but there realistically isn't a good way to monitor it.
ReplyDeleteThe police brutality has gotten out of control. If the situation was getting out of hand and if there was a line of cause, then definitely the pepper spray should have been used by the police officer. But, as you can see in the video the girls were penned in (they were facing the other direction because a women right beside them had been pushed to the ground and dragged by her hair by another police officer) and then out of nowhere an officer walked by and maces them.

I understand that under the stress and pressure of being in such a situation such as the protest, that police officers are excused on certain levels. But for such an act to go by unpunished, where the officer wasn't even at least immediately suspended after the incident is outrageous.
