Well I keep forgetting to do these blog posts, so I will slowly churn these out. In this blog I really want to focus on the Obama administration not allowing Plan B, or the morning after pill, to be available without a prescription. With my liberal view point, I was quite disappointed. I know the conservative in the class will take this as a victory.
The main reason this disappoints me is the reason why Obama did this. In 2009, he pledged to have everything his administration do be backed by sound science. In this situation, he blatantly ignored the sound science. The statement that was issued said that adolescent females weren't as knowledgeable about the pill and how to use it. This is shown to be wrong in many studies done in the last few years. Also, if they can't make a decision about a pill, how will they be good parents?
Another complaint I have with this is Obama and his administration made this decision to try and seem more conservative to get reelected. This fills me with great disappointment. I felt Obama wasn't that sort of politician. But, this decision shows he is. He just wants to save his ass. If he cares more about keeping his job than the welfare of the country, I hope he isn't reelected.
Obviously, I am upset with the decision. Feel free to continue this discussion in the comments. I can't wait for big smokes reply.

  1. One problem with the "sound science" is that the studies are done by US government organizations who know what they're supposed to make the data say. I believe that these studies should be done by unbiased non-governmental parties, but that's not necessarily realistic. A lot of "sound science" could be found for issues like legalization of drugs, or in this case Plan B. But if that's not what an administration wants, they can find a way to have the "sound science" agree with their views.

  2. Another thing is, I don't know how knowledgeable you are about the morning after pill is, but from what I've read and learned about the side effects it can be pretty dangerous and make you feel super awful.

It basically purges your system of EVERYTHING and it makes you feel terrible. Probably like having the flu and food poisoning at the same time X 50, if that gives you any perspective.

What if a young girl wants to have the morning after pill but she had some kind of condition that could be irritated and become harmful or lethal to her if combined with the pill? I don't think there should be restriction to access to the pill but I also think there needs to be a voice of reason from the doctor to make sure that the morning after pill won't get them into any more trouble then they're already in. People are completely clueless about all medicine, let alone something as potent as this.

  3. I also disagree with Obama's decision, women should have the right to have the morning after pill available for them without needing a prescription. But, there should, as Hannah said, be more information presented to them when they're trying to get it at the pharmacy. If you've been warned of the effects than you should be able to make your own decision.

  4. I feel like Obama definitely sold out by passing this bill to try to appeal more to Conservatives in time for the upcoming election. As long as the warnings at viable and people are aware of the side effects I see no harm in selling them without a prescription. If conservatives are so against abortions, can't they give liberals just a little slack?

  5. I'd also like to go a little Pro Choice rant right now because even though I think people should learn to live with their mistakes. A mistake like a baby is a much serious mistake than just getting "drinking underage" on your permanent record for example. Imagine if a women was raped and then she couldn't abort this baby which she did not want and will probably always remind her of the horrible incident. That would not be fair for the woman or the baby she was unwillingly bringing into the world. Although adoption is very good option that brings problems too. Its just so complicated! Why not just let people make that decision for themselves instead of the government forcing them to deliver the baby?
